Artist Statement:

Perverse permutations abound, arouse, and confuse in a universe where particular powers drive one to exclude the unusual. Naturally, these particular powers believe that their particular patterns look consistent but are blissfully unaware of the cosmic tenderness which will cause them to deviate.

Passion, an authentic gesture neither contrived nor constrained but an entirely artificial combination of chance and design which violates social norms, brought on by feelings of otherness and loneliness that forces one to petition the other to document and eyewitness the magical transformations of one's readymades into a knowledge which has no beginning or end. A dizzy spiral of glee and malice that culminates in the abstraction of stimulation into an object which functions as a decoration meant to disguise and distinguish life from death, a fetish against inhumanity and a potent object of exchange, a fearless exhibition of one's unnatural desires.

Michael Mahalchick has recently participated in Greater New York at PS 1, group shows in Oslo, Los Angeles and Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York City. His work will be featured in the courtyard at The Sculpture Center in Long Island City in January, 2006. Michael received an MFA from Cal Arts in 1995.
